Nutritional Supplements - Should you take them?

In a perfect world we would get all the nutritional supplements (vitamins, minerals and nutrients) we need for optimal health from the food we eat. We would eat lots and lots of fresh organic fruits and vegetables, healthy fats and lean proteins. We would not consume unhealthy fats, trans-fats, hormone laced dairy and meats, or highly processed artificially flavored chemical ridden food products. We would never skip a meal, always refrain from sugary snacks, get lots of rest, and never be stressed. We would drink pure water and breathe clean air and would glow with good health!

Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world; yet to be healthy, strong and energized our bodies need a wide range of essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other micronutrients. There is an archaic argument that "I can get everything I need from food.” But can you? Do you?

Studies show that many of us don’t even get the minimal daily requirement of many of these important nutrients. Even with a well balanced diet, it is difficult to reach the advanced levels of nutrients modern science has shown to promote optimal health.*

According to the American Medical Association, "Insufficient vitamin intake is apparently a cause of chronic diseases…Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone. Pending strong evidence of effectiveness from randomized trials, it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements."

Why we need vitamin and mineral nutritional supplements?

  • Stress
  • Pesticides
  • Pollution
  • Air Travel
  • Medications
  • Foods
  • Food Additives
  • Exercise
  • Chlorine in treated water
  • Mercury in seafood and tooth fillings
  • Smoking
  • Poor lifestyle habits
  • Unbalanced diets

Health Benefits of Nutritional Supplements

  • Builds up your immune system
  • Increases your energy level
  • Improves sensitivity to insulin and helps release fat
  • Enhances your appearance (skin, hair, nails, etc.
  • Improves your memory and concentration

Mehmet Oz, MD and Michael Roizen, MD in their book, You: On A Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management, suggest you take a multivitamin daily as an insurance policy against less than perfect food choices.

They go on to suggest that daily you take:

  • Total of 1,200 milligrams of calcium, 600 IU of vitamin D, 400 milligrams of magnesium and 300 milligrams of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) through food and supplementation
  • 2 grams of distilled fish oil for omega 3 fatty acids
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

Not all vitamins and supplements are created equal! They must high quality and bio-available (absorbed by the body) to be effective!
